BJP Member of Parliament Kamlesh Paswan criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal for opposing the National Register of Citizens (NRC), claiming that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is appeasing a specific community for electoral advantage. During a statement on Saturday, Paswan, who serves as Minister of State in the Ministry of Rural Development, stated that the BJP's push for the NRC is aimed at ensuring proper identification of citizens and preventing alleged infiltration into the state. He accused Banerjee of misleading the public for votes and asserted that the people of West Bengal are ready for political change, emphasizing development as a key issue in the upcoming elections. The TMC has countered this position, with General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee asserting that the party would not permit the NRC to take place if they remain in power. As West Bengal gears up for crucial elections on April 23 and 29, with results due on May 4, the political landscape remains tense, especially following the TMC's significant victory in the 2021 elections, where they secured 213 seats compared to the BJP's 77.
