Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the Assam Police will pursue Congress leader Pawan Khera, even from the netherworld, to uncover the source of allegedly forged documents that defamed Sarma's family. Khera had accused Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, Sarma's wife, of holding three foreign passports and owning undeclared luxury properties in Dubai. Following these allegations, Sharma filed a first information report (FIR) against Khera at the Assam police crime branch in Guwahati. An Assam police team subsequently visited Khera's residence in Nizamuddin, New Delhi, but he was not home. Reports suggest Khera is currently in Telangana, where the Assam police will require local police permission to proceed with their investigation. Sarma and his wife dismissed Khera's claims as fabricated and threatened legal action within 48 hours, asserting that the allegations were intended to disrupt the electoral environment. In response, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge stated that they are prepared for the legal proceedings and have requested probes by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh criticized the police's actions as a misuse of state power to intimidate opposition voices. The Assam police claimed to have seized electronic devices during their search at Khera's residence, alleging the discovery of incriminating evidence. The political tension continues as Sarma is contesting the Jalukbari constituency in the upcoming Assembly elections.
