Uttar Pradesh's Zero Fatality Drive (ZFD), initiated on January 1, 2026, has resulted in an 11.55% reduction in road accident fatalities and a 7.43% decrease in total crashes within the first quarter. This initiative has reportedly saved around 450 lives, averaging nearly five lives saved each day. The police have enhanced their crash investigation methods, training officers in collaboration with the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) and other experts to improve the quality of investigations. The program targets 487 accident-prone police stations across all seven police commissionerates and 68 districts. Notably, 573 crash control teams have been established, equipped with modern devices such as speed laser guns and breath analyzers, to enforce traffic regulations more effectively. The initiative aims to address high-risk areas and has classified serious accidents with three or more fatalities as special reports to improve accountability. The state government has allocated funds for additional traffic enforcement measures, including interceptors and CCTV cameras, to further enhance road safety and reduce fatalities.
