Doctors at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, have expressed serious concerns regarding a severe intestinal infection caused by the roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides. This warning follows the recent surgery of a four-year-old child whose infection led to a perforated intestine. Dr. Mohit Kumar Mathur, a professor of surgery at GIMS, highlighted that children are particularly susceptible to such infections, which can escalate quickly if symptoms are ignored. The infection is often caused by consuming contaminated food or water and is exacerbated by poor hygiene practices. Experts stress that timely intervention and treatment can prevent complications, yet many cases go unnoticed due to a lack of awareness. They recommend basic hygiene measures such as proper handwashing, consuming well-cooked food, and drinking clean water to mitigate risks. Additionally, regular deworming is advised to protect children from these infections.
