India's National Immunisation Programme, which provides free vaccinations to protect children against diseases like polio and measles, has seen a significant portion of its allocated funds remain unspent, according to Right to Information (RTI) data. For the financial year 2025-26, the government approved ₹3,434 crore (approximately $410 million USD), but only ₹1,060 crore was utilized by December 2025. In previous years, spending was also below the approved amounts, with ₹2,250 crore used in 2023-24 against a budget of ₹3,232 crore, and ₹1,971 crore spent in 2024-25 from ₹3,186 crore allocated. Despite these financial discrepancies, the program has successfully vaccinated 2.3 crore to 2.5 crore children annually from 2021-22 to 2024-25, with full immunization coverage rising from 88.2% to 98.1% during this period. However, the RTI data reveals gaps in record-keeping, such as the absence of gender-specific vaccination figures. RTI activist Amit Gupta emphasized the need for efficient fund utilization and suggested expanding vaccine coverage to include influenza, typhoid, and hepatitis, which are essential for comprehensive child health protection.
