A fire incident at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, commonly known as Sion Hospital, in Mumbai has raised significant concerns regarding fire safety protocols. On March 31, a Level-I fire broke out in the hospital’s OPD building, resulting in the evacuation of approximately 300-350 patients. Although no injuries occurred, the incident highlighted serious lapses in fire safety measures, particularly the outdated fire-fighting equipment. Kishori Pednekar, the opposition leader in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), discovered that many fire extinguishers had expired, some as recently as two months ago, during her visit to the hospital. She criticized the hospital for failing to address this issue during its annual fire audit. The hospital serves over 5,000 patients daily, raising concerns for the safety of patients, visitors, and staff. In response, the BMC has instructed the hospital to refill its fire extinguishers. Dr. Pramod Ingale, the hospital dean, confirmed that 714 fire extinguishers had expired and that the BMC's central purchase department has approved their refilling. The process is expected to take about a month. Meanwhile, the hospital will conduct a self-audit to identify fire hazards and improve safety standards, involving department heads in assessing fire safety measures.
