Tension rose in Sector 45, Chandigarh, on Tuesday as the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) resumed its demolition drive, which had begun the previous day. The demolition of two houses led to significant protests, with residents accusing the CHB of targeting locked properties without transparency. Eyewitnesses reported confrontations between protesters and police, necessitating additional law enforcement to manage the situation. The protests reflect long-standing grievances among residents regarding housing policies, with many feeling that their concerns are being overlooked in favor of immediate demolitions. MP Manish Tewari voiced strong opposition to the CHB's actions, emphasizing the need for a practical policy to regularize necessary modifications in housing rather than resorting to demolitions. He highlighted that the underlying issues have persisted for 25 years and called for a sustainable resolution that respects residents' needs.
