In response to the recent flash floods that disrupted Pune, Maharashtra, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure and Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram have committed to ensuring the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is ready for the monsoon season by June 2023. During a review meeting, they acknowledged the criticism regarding waterlogging and pledged to improve the city's drainage systems. Ram highlighted that the stormwater lines often get clogged due to plastic waste and garbage, which hampers water flow. He noted that the city has identified 122 spots prone to flooding and will focus on clearing these areas before the rains begin. Additionally, the PMC plans to construct tar roads in internal areas, opting for cement-concrete roads only where necessary due to budget constraints. Both officials emphasized the importance of staff diligence during crises, with Ram stating that while most staff work hard, there are some who do not. They also allocated funds for tree maintenance to prevent further complications during heavy rains. The PMC aims to provide compensation to those affected by the recent floods, reinforcing their commitment to better city management.
