On Wednesday, Pune, India, was hit by intense unseasonal rain, described as a 'cloudburst-like' event, leading to significant waterlogging across the city. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reported over 145 locations affected by flooding, with 82 incidents of fallen trees. One tragic outcome was the death of Ranjana Navnath Gire, who was killed when a tree fell on her near Navshya Maruti Chowk on Sinhagad Road. Residents expressed frustration over the PMC's lack of preparedness, citing clogged drains as a major contributor to the flooding. Santosh Jagtap, a local resident, noted that the drains were filled with garbage and silt, causing roads to turn into rivers within minutes. Despite ongoing cleaning efforts, the intensity of the rainfall overwhelmed the city's stormwater infrastructure. Additional municipal commissioner Omprakash Diwate acknowledged the situation as a lesson for the administration, while municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram called for an assessment of the failures. Political leaders criticized the PMC's claims of pre-monsoon readiness, highlighting administrative failures in maintaining stormwater drains.
