In Pune, Maharashtra, two tragic accidents involving water tankers have resulted in the deaths of a teenager and a woman within 48 hours, highlighting ongoing safety issues in the NIBM, Mohammadwadi, Undri, and Wanowrie areas. The first incident occurred on April 5, when 19-year-old Aariz Shaikh was killed after a tanker struck his two-wheeler. Just two days later, another woman lost her life in a similar accident in Wanowrie. These incidents have intensified calls from residents for immediate action against the unregulated movement of tankers, particularly during peak traffic hours when roads are congested. Civic activist Jaymala Dhankikar criticized the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for failing to address these safety concerns, questioning how tax revenues are utilized. Many residents attribute the surge in tanker traffic to inadequate water supply from the civic body, prompting private suppliers to fill the gap. Sushant, a local tanker supplier, noted that while some operators employ speed monitoring, issues like blind spots and drunk driving pose serious risks. Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), acknowledged that such incidents have become more frequent due to rapid urbanization and indicated that stricter regulations to limit tanker movement during peak hours are under consideration.
