Loyal, a US-based biotech firm, is developing a new daily pill called LOY-002 aimed at extending the lifespan of senior dogs aged 10 years and older. This beef-flavored prescription medication is currently undergoing regulatory review and is part of one of the largest clinical trials in veterinary history focused on canine longevity. LOY-002 works by targeting the Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) hormone, which, while important for growth in puppies, is linked to faster aging in adult dogs. By reducing IGF-1 levels, the drug aims to slow down biological aging and lower the risk of age-related diseases, especially in larger breeds that typically have higher IGF-1 levels. Celine Halioua, founder and CEO of Loyal, expressed optimism about the drug's potential, stating that they are close to achieving their goal of the first FDA-approved longevity drug for dogs. If LOY-002 receives final approval, it could be available by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, veterinarians recommend maintaining regular health practices for senior dogs, including checkups, a balanced diet, and appropriate exercise.
