The Khanna police department in Punjab, India, has implemented a weekly off policy for its officers to improve their mental and physical well-being, despite facing a shortage of personnel. Senior Superintendent of Police Darpan Ahluwalia emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Police Act of 1861, which entitles officers to a day of rest each week. Currently, the district has approximately 200 police personnel deployed, making duty management challenging. The new policy includes a roster system for station house officers (SHOs) across all eight police stations, ensuring that duties continue smoothly even when an officer is off. The policy allows for personnel to remain stationed at their posts and be called back in emergencies, ensuring law enforcement continuity. SSP Ahluwalia noted that continuous work without adequate rest can lead to fatigue, affecting efficiency and behavior. This initiative aims to address these concerns and promote a better work-life balance for police officers.
