The Bihar health department is set to require all hospitals, both government and private, to prominently display information regarding free medical treatment for acid attack victims. This directive aims to ensure that survivors are aware of their rights and can access necessary medical care without charge. Bihar health secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh emphasized the importance of compliance with existing laws, reinforcing a 2015 order that mandated free treatment for such victims. The initiative comes in response to concerns raised by Justice Rajeev Ranjan Prasad of the Patna High Court, who noted the lack of displayed information in hospitals. The urgency of this measure is underscored by rising acid attack cases in Bihar, with 176 incidents reported in 2021, 202 in 2022, and 207 in 2023. The right to free treatment for acid attack victims was established in the landmark Laxmi vs Union of India case in 2006, with the Supreme Court mandating comprehensive treatment without any financial burden on the victims. Hospitals that deny treatment could face legal consequences as per the Supreme Court's directives.
