On April 2, 2023, the Delhi High Court acquitted Dinesh Garg and VK Datta, two former engineers of the Delhi government's flood control department, in a 35-year-old bribery case. They were originally convicted in September 2002 for allegedly demanding a ₹900 bribe to facilitate the clearance of contractor bills. The bench, led by Justice Chandrashekharan Sudha, found the evidence insufficient to establish their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, noting that crucial witnesses were not examined and inconsistencies existed in the evidence. The court stated that the prosecution's failure to substantiate its claims raised significant doubts about the case, leading to the conclusion that the trial court had erred in its judgment. Garg and Datta, represented by advocates Sameer Chandra and Sunil Dalal, contended that they had been falsely implicated, supported by muster rolls indicating they were not present at the office when the alleged bribe was demanded. The CBI, represented by special public prosecutor Atul Guleria, argued that the trial court's decision was sound and based on a thorough evaluation of the evidence.
