In an innovative approach to traffic management, the Delhi Traffic Police has launched Project SANGAM (Synergistic Action and Networked Governance for Area Mobility), which encourages citizen participation in identifying and solving traffic issues. This initiative, directed by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, aims to transform traffic management from a top-down enforcement model to a shared civic responsibility. The project has already seen participation from over 6,000 residents through 30 meetings, focusing on neighborhoods like Connaught Place, Khan Market, and Defence Colony.
Authorities have begun implementing suggestions from residents, such as installing barricades in Chanakyapuri to address unauthorized parking and traffic congestion during VIP movements. The project emphasizes localized solutions, recognizing that traffic issues vary significantly across different areas. With more than 50 actionable suggestions logged, Project SANGAM is beginning to show positive results, including improved enforcement and structural fixes by civic agencies.
Despite its promising start, maintaining citizen engagement and effective enforcement will be crucial for the project's long-term success. If successful, Project SANGAM could serve as a model for urban mobility solutions in Indian cities, fostering partnerships between authorities and the communities they serve.
