The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed the Bombay High Court that it needs an area of over 27,000 square metres for the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Worli, Mumbai, to accommodate future population growth. Previously, the court permitted the use of 17,756 square metres, but BMC's recent affidavit highlights the necessity for a larger space to support a treatment capacity of 500 Million Litres per Day (MLD). The STP is part of a larger project that includes the Worli Waste Water Treatment Facility (WWTF), expected to be operational by July 2027 and initially capable of treating 250 MLD for reuse. The BMC emphasized that the area is critical for maintaining two major sewer trunk lines from the British era, which are essential for stormwater discharge and preventing flooding. The court has scheduled a further hearing for April 17 to review the petitioner's response to BMC's affidavit.
