During a press conference in Chennai, Piyush Goyal (Union Commerce and Industry Minister) launched a strong critique of the Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, over its handling of the state's finances. He released a white paper titled 'Tamil Nadu Government Financial Crisis', questioning the whereabouts of state funds despite the presence of a robust industrial and agricultural sector. Goyal pointed out that Tamil Nadu's debt has surged to over ₹2 lakh crore in the past five years, with the state facing interest payments of ₹76,000 crore. He accused the DMK of diverting attention from these issues through false narratives. Goyal also defended the Goods and Services Tax (GST), stating that it has significantly increased the state's revenue, which the DMK fails to acknowledge. Furthermore, he criticized the DMK for dynastic politics, suggesting that the Chief Minister's position is reserved for the Stalin family. Goyal expressed confidence in the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) prospects in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, scheduled for April 23, asserting that the election could mark a turning point in the state's governance.
