Corruption allegations have emerged as a significant issue in West Bengal's political landscape, particularly as the state approaches the 2026 Assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are actively using these allegations to sway public opinion. The most notable case is the school recruitment scam, which resulted in the cancellation of over 25,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs after court intervention. Former TMC minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested in 2022 amid this scandal, which has implicated other party leaders as well. In addition to the school scam, allegations of corruption in ration distribution and cattle smuggling have led to the arrests of senior TMC figures, including Jyotipriya Mallick and Anubrata Mondal. These developments have transformed the perception of corruption from an abstract issue to a personal grievance for many affected families. Recently, several TMC leaders have been released on bail, which the party has touted as a vindication against the BJP's politically motivated attacks. However, the BJP maintains its stance, labeling the TMC as corrupt and launching targeted campaigns against its leaders. As both parties gear up for the elections, the TMC is attempting to shift focus to its welfare initiatives while countering the corruption narrative, indicating a complex and evolving political battle in West Bengal.
