The political atmosphere in Jharkhand is heating up as the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) demands to contest both Rajya Sabha seats in the upcoming elections. In response, the Congress party has appointed Bhupesh Baghel and Ajay Sharma as All India Congress Committee (AICC) observers, with Pranav Jha named as its candidate for one of the seats. This decision comes after a meeting led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, where JMM legislators authorized him to finalize candidates for both seats. The nomination process began on June 1, with the last date for filing papers set for June 8, and polling scheduled for June 18, 2026. The JMM-led coalition, which holds 56 seats in the 81-member Assembly, must secure at least 28 first-preference votes to win. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced plans to field a candidate for one of the seats, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), an ally of the JMM, has indicated that discussions on candidates within the coalition have yet to take place.
