Students at Lucknow University (LU) are embarking on a pioneering study to document the city’s ‘Bada Mangal’ bhandara culture, which encompasses community feasts that have been a part of local traditions for years. This initiative, spearheaded by the Anthropology Department, aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of over 2,100 bhandaras that have occurred across Lucknow. According to Udai Pratap Singh, head of the Anthropology Department, the study involves the formation of eight teams that are strategically divided into zones to ensure thorough coverage of bhandaras in every area of the city. This sample-based study is significant as it not only records the number of bhandaras but also delves into their social, cultural, and religious implications. The first Bada Mangal saw around 1,000 bhandaras, illustrating the tradition's deep roots in the community. This research is expected to shed light on the importance of these feasts in fostering community bonds and preserving cultural heritage in Lucknow.
