On Tuesday, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court, consisting of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Rai Chattopadhyay, recused itself from hearing the petition for a fresh investigation into the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The case has now been reassigned to Chief Justice Sujoy Paul. This decision follows a directive from the bench in April for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to initiate a new probe into the incident. The victim's mother, Ratna Debnath, who has since entered politics and won a seat in the West Bengal assembly, expressed her intention to discuss the case with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari after meeting the Chief Justice. The case has garnered national attention, especially after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised an inquiry commission during its campaign for the assembly elections. The CBI had previously been granted permission to re-interrogate the sole convict, Sanjay Roy, and investigate other suspects using modern technology to uncover a larger conspiracy. The victim's body was discovered on August 9, 2024, leading to widespread protests from junior doctors demanding justice.
