The Indian government is examining a new hybrid format for the NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate) examination to address security concerns following previous paper leak controversies. The proposed model involves digitally transmitting encrypted question papers to examination centres, where they would be printed on-site under strict security measures. This approach aims to mitigate risks associated with manual handling during transportation and storage, which are critical points for potential leaks. A senior health ministry official indicated that discussions regarding these reforms will soon commence, involving key stakeholders such as the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the National Testing Agency (NTA). The hybrid model, recommended by the Radhakrishnan Committee, seeks to balance the benefits of traditional offline exams while accommodating the logistical challenges of a fully online format, particularly for the 2.3 million candidates. Officials noted that a complete shift to online examinations could limit accessibility for candidates from rural and semi-urban areas, who may not be comfortable with technology. Furthermore, the transition to a fully online system would necessitate significant infrastructure improvements and extensive preparation to ensure reliability and security. Pilot projects and operational guidelines will be essential for successful implementation of the new model.
