The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been allocated a 10-acre plot near the Integrated Freight Complex in Ghazipur to establish a new fresh waste processing facility. This initiative is part of the MCD's efforts to manage the substantial waste load affecting the Ghazipur landfill, which is under pressure to remediate by 2029. The new facility will process at least 800 metric tonnes of waste per day, with half of the site dedicated to processing fresh waste and the other half for producing compressed biogas from wet waste. This project is expected to significantly alleviate the strain on the landfill by diverting fresh municipal waste. In addition to this facility, MCD is pursuing the establishment of decentralized processing units across its 12 administrative zones, requesting three acres in each zone for further waste management initiatives. The MCD is also enhancing its biomining efforts at existing landfill sites, which involves separating decomposed waste components. Currently, there are 155 material recovery facilities in operation, processing a total of 252 tonnes of waste, but the new initiatives aim for a more effective and larger-scale waste management strategy.
