On Tuesday, New Delhi recorded its highest temperature of May at 39°C, which is a degree below the normal for this time of year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that temperatures could rise to 40°C by Thursday, 41°C by Friday, and possibly reach 42°C by Sunday. This increase follows a period of cooler weather attributed to a western disturbance, which has brought rain to parts of northwest India but has largely bypassed Delhi. As of now, the city has experienced 10.9mm of rainfall this month, surpassing the long-period average of 7.6mm for the first 12 days of May. The minimum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 27.6°C, two degrees above normal. Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi has worsened, reaching 170, indicating moderate pollution, as forecasts suggest this level may persist until Friday.
