In a significant electoral outcome, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a historic win in the Assam assembly elections, securing 82 out of 90 seats contested. The party dominated Upper Assam, winning 33 of 35 seats, with only one seat each going to Congress and its ally Raijor Dal. The BJP also performed well in central Assam and the hill districts, while Congress faced significant losses, including defeats for key figures like state president Gaurav Gogoi in Jorhat and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia in Nazira. Congress managed to win only the Naoboicha seat in Upper Assam, while its victories were concentrated in Lower Assam and Barak Valley. The BJP's vote share rose to over 37.81%, an increase of around 5% from the previous election, whereas Congress's share slightly increased to 29.84%. This election result poses challenges for Congress, indicating difficulties in reviving its political fortunes in Assam.
