An informal group of ministers, led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, discussed the implementation of Modi's appeal, which includes promoting public transport, electric vehicles, and car-pooling. The government is facing significant costs due to soaring crude prices, and Modi's call aims to curb wasteful consumption. His recent remarks have sparked speculation about potential increases in fuel prices, resulting in long queues at fuel stations in some regions. Oil Secretary Neeraj Mittal highlighted the government's intent to stabilize fuel prices and mentioned plans to expand strategic reserves of oil and gas, although he did not confirm any imminent price hikes. Maintaining a 90-day reserve for a country that consumes 5 million barrels of oil daily poses financial challenges, Mittal noted, in response to criticisms of India's current strategic petroleum reserves.
