The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has sanctioned the prosecution of three engineering officials in connection with the drowning death of Naresh, a 26-year-old man, who fell into an under-construction stormwater drain on July 9, 2022. Two junior engineers are being prosecuted for alleged negligence, while a subdivisional engineer's contract has been terminated. The Gurugram Police had sought this sanction to proceed with legal action, as GMDA engineers are classified as public servants under the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority Act, 2017. The incident revealed a lack of safety measures at the site, with no barricades or warning signs present. Following this incident, GMDA's CEO PC Meena has mandated that executive engineers ensure safety protocols are followed at project sites, holding them accountable for any negligence. This decision comes shortly after another incident on the same road, where a car driven by a female professor overturned into an excavated pit but she was rescued.
