On Tuesday, Ludhiana, Punjab, inaugurated its Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) and upgraded Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), becoming the third city in the state to do so, following Jalandhar and Mohali. The project, inaugurated by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, aims to enhance surveillance, improve traffic discipline, and ensure faster emergency responses through technology-driven policing. The ITMS is operational at 46 locations and features 1,700 high-resolution cameras installed at 259 key locations throughout the city. This system can automatically detect various traffic violations, including red light jumping and overspeeding, thus improving enforcement efficiency. As a result of the integrated operations, the police control room's response time has been reduced from approximately 15 minutes to 7-8 minutes. The system also includes a dedicated green corridor for emergency vehicles, particularly important for situations like organ transplants. In addition, the DGP highlighted the Punjab Police's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against organized crime, stating that over 80% of extortion calls to residents are fake, often made by local criminals impersonating gangsters.
