Starting June 1, 2023, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will provide free cremation services at all CNG and electric crematoria in the city. This initiative is designed to combat air pollution by reducing reliance on wood-based cremations. The MCD will compensate non-governmental organizations (NGOs) ₹500 for each cremation they conduct using CNG or electric methods. The project is set to last for two years, with the possibility of extension based on its effectiveness. Currently, the MCD operates nine CNG crematoria and one electric crematorium, while overseeing 59 wood-based cremation grounds. The new facilities at Sarai Kale Khan and Rohini will cater to diverse religious communities, enhancing accessibility for all. This policy change was approved by the MCD council in February 2026, highlighting the urgent need to reduce smoke emissions from traditional cremation methods, which accounted for only 8-9% of cremations in the past year. The estimated cost to provide these free services is ₹2 crore annually.
