In 2024, India recorded 5.89 million crimes, reflecting a 5.7% decrease from 6.24 million in 2023, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The crime rate per 100,000 people dropped to 419, the lowest since 2019. The decline was primarily attributed to reductions in crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the IPC mid-year. However, the chargesheeting rate decreased slightly from 72.7% to 72.1%, and the percentage of pending cases increased from 29.2% to 31.2%. Conversely, cyber crimes surged to 101,118, indicating ongoing challenges in addressing digital offenses. The report also highlighted declines in crimes against SCs and STs, while some categories related to IT laws and finance saw increases.
