Bengaluru, known as India's technology capital, has been identified as the city with the highest rate of cybercrime, recording 17,561 cases in 2024 according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). This figure represents more than half of all cybercrime cases reported across India's major cities, with the state of Karnataka reporting a total of 21,993 cases. The national cybercrime rate has increased from 6.2 to 7.3, with fraud making up 72.6% of these incidents. In stark contrast, Delhi's cybercrime cases have significantly decreased from 685 in 2022 to just 404 in 2024, highlighting Bengaluru's unique position. The prevalent types of cybercrime in Bengaluru include investment scams, UPI fraud, and impersonation, reflecting a disturbing trend in digital safety. Authorities suggest that improved reporting mechanisms may partly explain the high incidence of reported crimes, indicating a growing awareness among residents. However, despite the high reporting rate, the charge-sheeting rate remains low at 33.7%, emphasizing the challenges in resolving these cases.
