According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report released for 2024, Delhi remains the city with the highest crime rates in India, despite a 15% reduction in overall criminal cases. The capital recorded 2,75,402 criminal incidents, significantly outpacing Mumbai, which had 51,428 cases. Notably, Delhi reported 13,396 cases of crimes against women, a 0.22% increase from the previous year, and 7,662 crimes against children, the highest in the country. The rate of crime against women in Delhi was 176.8 per lakh women, placing it fourth among Indian cities. The NCRB data also highlighted a concerning trend in crimes against senior citizens, with 1,267 cases registered in 2024. Although the murder rate in Delhi saw a slight decline, it remained at 2.3 per lakh population, exceeding the national average of 1.9. Furthermore, Delhi was identified as the 'theft capital' of India, with 1,80,973 theft cases reported, making up 73.3% of the national total. These statistics underscore persistent public safety challenges in the national capital.
