Rafael Calinisan, the Commissioner of the National Police Commission (Napolcom), publicly defended his confrontation with Rizal police officer Cpl. Simeon Suan, who was relieved of duty following his controversial arrest of a 76-year-old man after a minor traffic accident in Taguig City. Calinisan emphasized the necessity for transparency and accountability in the police force, stating that the viral nature of the incident warranted a public response to uphold trust in law enforcement. During a press briefing, Suan maintained that the senior citizen had attempted to run him over, expressing his displeasure at being used to improve the police's public image. Calinisan has ordered criminal proceedings against Suan for violating Republic Act No. 7438, which safeguards the rights of individuals under arrest, and has also initiated administrative cases against him for oppression and grave misconduct. The Napolcom commissioner is reviewing Suan's previous records and neuropsychological examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
