Uttar Pradesh, India, is set to enhance its higher education landscape with the establishment of 29 new government degree colleges beginning July 1. This initiative aims to improve access to education and strengthen the academic framework across the state. Of the new colleges, 20 will be established under the Prime Minister Jan Vikas Programme (PMJVK), with proposals for necessary teaching and non-teaching posts already submitted to the state government. The colleges will operate as regular government institutions, contrary to earlier considerations of public-private partnerships or affiliations with state universities. This expansion comes as Uttar Pradesh aims to increase its gross enrolment ratio in higher education from 27% to 50% by 2035. Currently, the state has 216 operational government degree colleges. Last year, only 46 out of 69 newly constructed colleges commenced teaching due to various challenges, including incomplete construction and lack of university affiliations. However, officials are optimistic about launching the new institutions without delays this July.
