The Supreme Court of India announced on Monday that it will seek a report from the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court regarding the functioning of appellate tribunals that handle appeals related to the electoral rolls in West Bengal. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed concerns after senior advocate Devadatt Kamat reported that these tribunals are not operating in accordance with the court's previous orders. Specifically, Kamat noted that the tribunals are restricting legal representation and not accepting physical applications. The Supreme Court had previously ruled that voters approved by these tribunals at least two days prior to the elections would be eligible to vote in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections, scheduled for April 23 and April 29. In a related matter, the court declined to consider an oral plea against the inclusion of approximately 700,000 new voters in the electoral rolls, stating that such matters can only be addressed through formal challenges.
