AMD Expands FSR 4 Upscaling Support to Older Radeon GPUs

AMD has announced that its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4 technology will soon be available for older Radeon GPUs. Starting in July, RDNA3 and RDNA3.5-based GPUs will receive support, with RDNA2 architecture GPUs, including the Radeon RX 6000 series, set to follow in early 2027.

AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4 technology, which was previously exclusive to the latest RDNA4 architecture, is set to be made available for older Radeon GPUs. The rollout will commence in July 2024 for RDNA3 and RDNA3.5-based GPUs, which encompass the Radeon RX 7000 series and integrated GPUs like the Radeon 890M and Radeon 8060S. Furthermore, support for RDNA2 architecture, including the Radeon RX 6000 series and devices like the Steam Deck, is slated for early 2027. This expansion could also enable FSR 4 functionality on gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, which utilize RDNA2-based GPUs. However, AMD's SVP Jack Huynh cautioned that performance may be impacted when adapting FSR 4's advanced upscaling capabilities to older architectures, as RDNA4 features AI accelerators that support FP8 data format, while older GPUs rely on INT8 hardware.
