Gurugram is facing significant challenges in flood preparedness as nearly 64% of its rainwater harvesting pits remain clogged ahead of the monsoon, according to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG). Out of 408 existing systems, only 150 have been cleaned, with ongoing efforts to clear the remaining 258 pits by the end of June. Progress varies by zone, with Zone 3 lagging behind, having desilted only 24 of its 121 pits. MCG has identified 155 hotspots prone to waterlogging, prioritizing 41 critical locations where water accumulates for extended periods. In partnership with IIT Gandhinagar, the MCG is also working on installing 207 new rainwater harvesting pits across the city, with 70 already completed. Residents have voiced concerns over inadequate cleaning and the impact on waterlogging, particularly in areas like Greenwood City and Sector 45, where the lack of functional pits exacerbates flooding issues during the monsoon.
