Some believe that the nearby Port Washington Generating Station may be responsible for the rust problem, especially after Ojeda recorded orange-tinted smoke rising from the plant. However, We Energies has denied any connection, asserting that tests show no link between the plant's emissions and the stains. The company explained that the orange tint observed in the steam was merely a reflection, not a result of emissions, and reiterated their compliance with environmental regulations. The ongoing investigation aims to address the fishermen's concerns.
