The Mumbai police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate a significant birth certificate fraud involving 87,347 certificates issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through an unauthorized SAP system. This system bypassed the central government's Civil Registration System (CRS) portal, violating the Registration of Births and Deaths Act of 1969, as amended in 2023. The fraud was highlighted by senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that the certificates could be misused for official identification, such as Aadhaar cards. Following Somaiya's complaints, the BMC has faced scrutiny, leading to the transfer or suspension of several ward-level medical health officers. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde confirmed that the investigation spans nearly 26 municipal wards, with 236 cases identified, of which 137 have already seen action. The SIT's formation comes after concerns about the integrity of identity verification processes within the BMC, with many records allegedly remaining unaddressed despite previous warnings.
