In 2019, Egyptian archaeologists discovered a pie-shaped structure in Northern Sinai, initially thought to be a political building for the ancient city of Pelusium. Recent findings reveal that it is actually a circular temple, measuring 115 feet (35 meters) in diameter, dedicated to the local god Pelusius. This temple, surrounded by channels and water tanks, was likely used for religious rituals from the 2nd century BCE to the 6th century CE. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities highlighted the temple's unique design as a significant representation of cultural interactions between Egypt and the ancient world. Hisham Hussein, head of Egypt’s Central Department for Maritime Antiquities and Sinai, noted that ongoing excavations have transformed their understanding of the site. While some experts express caution regarding the conclusions, the potential identification of this temple as a cult structure could provide valuable insights into ancient Egyptian religious practices. Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, has committed to further excavations and studies to uncover more about this historically rich site.
