Ravindra Waikar, the MP for Mumbai North West, has urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to establish a mini fire station in Jogeshwari East, close to the Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital. In a letter dated April 13, Waikar pointed to the rapid urbanization in Jogeshwari, Andheri, and Goregaon East, which has led to increased population density and a rise in multi-storey buildings. He noted that the nearest fire stations are too far away, and traffic congestion on the Western Express Highway and Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) often delays emergency response times. Waikar proposed utilizing municipal plot number 49 for the new fire station to enhance disaster preparedness for nearly a million residents in the area. A BMC official stated that while there are currently six command centers across seven zones, there is no command center in zone 4, where the mini fire station is being requested. Plans for a command center in Goregaon are underway, and the BMC will assess the feasibility of additional facilities. Residents have long called for a fully equipped fire station, as existing units in Irla and Goregaon are not capable of handling high-rise fires. Additionally, a long-pending fire station project in Andheri West remains undeveloped despite previous commitments.
