On Sunday, a United Airlines Boeing 767, arriving from Venice, Italy, collided with a streetlight and a tractor-trailer while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The incident occurred as the plane was landing at over 160 miles per hour, crossing the New Jersey Turnpike. A tire from the plane's landing gear struck the pole and the truck, injuring the truck driver, who was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, all over 200 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the aircraft were unharmed. The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate. United Airlines stated that a rigorous flight safety investigation will be conducted, and the crew has been removed from service during this process. The National Transportation Safety Board will analyze the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder as part of their investigation. The runway where the incident occurred is located less than 400 feet from the busy New Jersey Turnpike, which can lead to startling situations for drivers as planes pass overhead. Air traffic control did not initially realize that the plane had struck the light pole upon landing.
