Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has unveiled a new non-basmati paddy variety named PR133, developed over seven years of research and field trials. Scheduled for introduction in the upcoming kharif season, PR133 is resistant to all 10 pathotypes of bacterial blight prevalent in Punjab. During trials, it achieved an impressive average yield of 30.5 quintals per acre. Agronomist Buta Singh Dhillon highlighted that PR133 features long, slender grains with high total and head rice recovery, making it desirable in the agro industry. This medium-duration variety matures in 111 days and is shorter in height, which helps to reduce biomass and address the challenge of paddy residue. Farmers are encouraged to start the nursery around May 20 and transplant the crop with the monsoon season from June 20-30, with initial sowing recommended on 1-2 acres this season.
