Delhi has experienced a troubling surge in fire-related emergencies, with over 7,800 incidents reported in just the first four months of 2026. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) attributes this increase to the poor upkeep of electrical appliances and wiring, a factor highlighted in the recent tragedy in Vivek Vihar, which resulted in nine fatalities. DFS officials noted that the city receives between 120 to 160 fire calls daily, driven by rising temperatures and the increased use of air conditioners. Many residents neglect to upgrade their electrical systems after months of inactivity, leading to malfunctions when appliances are turned back on. Additionally, the improper placement of electricity meters, particularly near staircases, has been identified as a significant fire hazard, often trapping residents in smoke-filled stairwells during emergencies. Fire officials are urging residents to take necessary precautions, such as obtaining fire No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for businesses and ensuring proper ventilation in homes to mitigate risks.
