The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a 10% water cut across Mumbai, effective May 15, due to alarmingly low water levels in the city's supply reservoirs. Currently, the reservoirs hold a combined total of 340,399 million liters, which is only 23.52% of the city's annual water requirement of 1,447,363 million liters. This decision follows advisories from the Water Resources Department of the Government of Maharashtra and is influenced by predictions from the Indian Meteorological Department regarding a potentially weaker monsoon next year due to the El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole phenomena. The BMC has urged residents to conserve water and reassured them that there is no need for panic. The water cut will also extend to the Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporations, and will remain in effect until adequate rainfall replenishes the reservoirs. Additionally, the BMC is taking measures to monitor and distribute water supply systematically.
