The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a 10% water cut across Mumbai, effective from May 15, due to critically low water levels in local reservoirs. The current available water supply stands at 340,399 Million Liters, which is just 23.52% of the city's annual requirement of 1,447,363 Million Liters. This measure is a precautionary response to forecasts of a weaker monsoon next year, influenced by the anticipated El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole phenomena. The BMC has urged citizens to use water judiciously and has assured that there is no need for panic. In addition to the city, the water cut will also apply to the Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporations. To mitigate the situation, Mumbai will receive an extra 147,092 Million Liters from the Bhatsa Dam and 90,000 Million Liters from the Upper Vaitarna Dam. The water cut will remain in effect until there is satisfactory rainfall and improvement in reservoir levels.
