The Indian government has reassured citizens that there are adequate stocks of crude oil, petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls for energy conservation. Sujata Sharma, joint secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), emphasized that there is no need for panic buying. Despite the stable prices of petrol and diesel, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) are facing significant financial strain, with an estimated under-recovery of ₹2 lakh crore for the June quarter and projected losses of about ₹1 lakh crore. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri noted that India has managed to maintain steady energy supplies without raising prices, unlike many other countries facing crises. Modi's appeal includes measures such as using public transport, carpooling, and reducing unnecessary travel and purchases. Additionally, the government is promoting the use of natural gas, having established 6.79 lakh new piped natural gas connections since March, with plans for more in the future. Over 52,300 consumers have surrendered their LPG connections as part of this transition.
