In a significant policy change, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to transfer all 18 Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Rajkiya Abhinav Vidyalayas from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board). This transition, approved by the Secondary Education Department on May 11, 2024, aims to address ongoing teacher shortages and reduce administrative hurdles. The schools will now be known as 'Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Model Inter Colleges'. The decision was influenced by the financial burden of CBSE's renewal fees, which amount to ₹25,000 (approximately $300 USD) every five years, a cost not covered in the budget for state-run schools. The UP Board's consent for this change was formalized on April 16, 2026. Originally launched in April 2016 as Samajwadi Abhinav Vidyalayas, these institutions were designed to provide modern education to rural students, similar to the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. Notably, one of the schools is located in Dandupur, Prayagraj, where the first school was inaugurated when the city was still known as Allahabad.
