The Manitoba Nurses Union is advocating for the swift establishment of a committee to implement nurse-to-patient ratios following the recent passage of related legislation. Darlene Jackson, the union president, described the legislation as a crucial step towards guaranteeing these ratios, which aim to enhance the quality of patient care. A recent report from a subcommittee, which includes government and health system representatives, suggested specific ratios, such as one nurse for every two to three patients in emergency settings and one for every one to two patients in adult intensive care. Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara stated that the implementation committee will examine these recommendations and the unique needs of various healthcare sites. However, Jackson expressed frustration over the delay in forming this committee, emphasizing that nurses are eager for these ratios to be established to ensure safer patient care. She hopes the committee will be in place soon, ideally within the next week, to facilitate better nursing conditions and patient outcomes in Manitoba.
