In Nashik, Maharashtra, the district administration has successfully tested a drone-based emergency delivery system aimed at improving healthcare access in remote areas of Surgana taluka. This initiative, developed in collaboration with IIT-Bombay, addresses significant healthcare challenges faced by approximately 25,000-30,000 residents in 20-25 villages, particularly during the monsoon season when traditional roads are often impassable due to flooding and landslides. The pilot program demonstrated the ability of drones to deliver essential medical supplies, including vaccines and laboratory samples, in a fraction of the time it would take by road. Drones flew from the Ambode primary health centre to remote locations like Khirdi and Bhati, covering distances of 10-12 kilometers. Tehsildar Ramji Rathod emphasized that this technology could transform disaster response and healthcare delivery in isolated regions. The drones, capable of carrying up to 8kg, are expected to be deployed regularly, with six health department personnel set to receive specialized training and piloting licenses, enhancing the efficiency of emergency responses in these challenging terrains.
